Our Founder and Inspiration

Late Dr.Rafiq Zakaria was the Founder and Chairman of the Maulana Azad Educational trust for over 40 years. A noted educationist, scholar-politician and author of international repute. His untiring efforts brought water to the city of Aurangabad through the Jayakwadi Dam Project in Paithan. He developed a new industrial area and established CIDCO whereby a new township came into existence called New Aurangabad.His grand vision for Aurangabad began to come true, for soon thereafter, the city was recognized as one of the fastest growing cities with the highest industrial growth potential.Hence, he was known as the Architect of modern Aurangabad.

Dr. Zakaria’s contribution to education has been immense and of everlasting mettle. He founded schools, colleges and institutes in Aurangabad and in Bombay. He laid the foundation of Maulana Azad College in the year 1963 and established a women’s college in the heart of the city which now is known as Dr.Rafiq Zakaria College for Women,Campus-II for girls who could otherwise not have been able to go beyond school education. Today over 4,000 girlsstudy in Campus II to take challenging careers so as to take their rightful place in society.

Dr. Rafiq Zakaria’s foresight and vision in recognizing the need for a college of education that would focus on training teachers of Urdu, Marathi, and English and imbibe in them the spirit of secularism and national integration.

The great crusader of secularism and modern reform also ensured that his institutions remained free of communal bias. He was also the Chancellor of the Jamia Urdu, Aligarh for over 25 years. Among his varied notable achievements, some can never be forgotten.

Rafiq Zakaria passed away on July 9, 2005. He was laid to rest in a pristine white mazaar, an ode in marble, a few paces inside the Gate of Knowledge, Baab- Ul-Ilm, which is the main entrance to the Campus Dr. Rafiq Zakaria Campus today stands testimony to the enduring efforts of our visionary mentor. The ever-enduring aura of the presence of the founder inspires every person associated with the Campus to achieve results both efficiently and effectively in every field of activity

Late Padmashri Fatma Zakaria Madam

Dr. Mrs. Fatma Rafiq Zakaria was a veteran journalist of national repute. After the sad demise of Dr.Rafiq Zakaria, Late Padmashri Fatma Zakaria Madam became the Chairman of the Maulana Azad Educational Trust and President of the Maulana Azad Education Society, Aurangabad and the Trust grew from strength to strength. A tremendous amount of Development in Physical infrastructural facilities of each institute along with construction of New Buildings and focusing on Quality Teaching and Learning are the hallmark of Mrs. Zakaria’s contribution to Dr. Rafiq Zakaria Campus and a glowing tribute to the memory of the great scholar-politician, educationist and crusader for secular values.In recognition of her sterling contribution to Education and Literature, the President of India has conferred on Mrs. Fatma Rafiq Zakaria, the prestigious Padma Shri award in January 2006. In February 2018, Padmashri Madam Fatma Rafiq Zakaria was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Huddersfield for her services to education

Dr. Fareed Zakaria

Named as a “Top 10 Global Thinker of the Last 10 Years” by Foreign Policy Magazine in 2019, Dr. Fareed Zakaria is an Indian-American journalist, political commentator and author. Host of CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, he writes a weekly column for the Washington Post. He has also been a columnist for Newsweek, editor of Newsweek International and an editor at large of Time magazine. He as published on a variety of subjects in international journals and is also the author of three highly-regarded and New York Times bestselling. He has won the National Magazine Award for his columns and commentary and was awarded the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) Founders Award for Excellence in Journalism. He has served on the boards of the Council on Foreign Relations. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2010 by Govt. of India. At present he is the Chairman Emeritus of Maulana Azad Education Trust.

Mr. Farhat Jamal

President

Mr. Farhat Jamal is serving as Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Maulana Azad Educational Trust (MAET) and Education Society. He is seasoned hospitality executive with over 30 years of experience at IHCL (Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces), where he served as Senior Vice President (West & Africa).

Trained at the Institute of Hotel Management, Pusa, New Delhi, He holds a Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) certification from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, and completed senior management programs at Cornell University (USA) & National University of Singapore

He took over the charge as Chairman of the Trust and Society in June 2021, His Vision & Focus is commitment to upholding the Trust’s foundational mission of delivering affordable, quality education particularly to marginalized and minority communities in and around Aurangabad city, staying aligned with the values of founding trustees Late Dr. Rafiq Zakaria and Late Padma Shri Dr. Fatma Rafiq Zakaria

I would like to pay my humble tribute to Our Founder Chairman Late Dr Rafiq Zakaria and Late Padmashri Dr. Fatma Rafiq Zakaria for establishing Marathwada College of Education which is a premier institution with a glorious past of more than 55 years and a symbol of quality education with a track record of exemplary results.

In changing times, along with technological development and emerging digital world, the role of teachers is also changing. To live up to this transformation, we have introduced new strategies in our pedagogical practices and new initiatives and collaborative approaches.

We have extended our outreach activities and linkages with various institutions of Government and Non-Government organizations of National and International repute. The continuous and collaborative efforts of the Management, Faculty, Students, Alumni and all other Stakeholders have cultivated a culture that is full of contentment and belongingness. We are still blessed with visionary managementwho continuously encourages by providing a holistic platform for career and employment. The Hon’ble President of the Society Mr. Farhat Jamal is the main source of inspiration and we translate his vision by creating an environment that fosters competitiveness, creative thinking and innovation in our teacher trainees
